Pacifical

Partner

Pacifical c.v. is the global tuna market development company jointly set up by the 8 PNA (Parties to the Nauru Agreement) Western Pacific island countries in 2011. Their goal is to promote MSC certified sustainable Skipjack and Yellowfin tuna caught within PNA waters.

Ocean’s partnership with Pacifical helps provide funds to these island countries’ governments to build schools, hospitals, roads & infrastructure, social security, and to protect their islands and homes against the rising sea levels due to global warming. 68% of Kiribati Government revenue comes from tuna fishing license fees, 81% in the case of Tokelau, 57% Tuvalu, 45% Marshall Islands, and 43% Micronesia. All these numbers can be found in this report. For each batch processed for Ocean’s, PNA will be giving an MSC certificate guaranteeing the fish comes from this area.

Ocean Wise

Partner

Ocean Wise is a conservation program that educates and empowers consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood.

Did you know: approximately 85% of the world’s fish stocks are overfished or fully exploited?

Overfishing is the greatest threat to our oceans today. When you see the Ocean Wise symbol next to a seafood item it’s your assurance of an ocean-friendly choice. Sustainable options are species that are caught or farmed in ways that ensure the long-term health and stability of that species, as well as the greater marine ecosystem.

The program uses four criteria when recommending a species:

  • It’s abundant and resilient to fishing pressures.
  • It’s well-managed with a comprehensive management plan based on current research.
  • It’s harvested in a method that ensures limited bycatch on non-target and endangered species.
  • It’s harvested in ways that limit damage to marine or aquatic habitats and negative interactions with other species.

It’s not too late to take action to protect our oceans and Ocean Brands is committed to continually improving our seafood sourcing. Look for the Ocean Wise symbol on our products, your assurance of an ocean friendly choice.

Cleanhub

Partner

With a growing network of partners, Cleanhub collects and repurposes plastic before it enters the world’s oceans. By calculating their plastic footprint and paying for the equivalent to be collected, sustainable brands like Ocean’s support Cleanhub’s mission to protect and preserve our oceans.

Globally, 91% of plastic waste does not get recycled. Non-recyclable items such as plastic bags, wrappers, and food containers end up in the environment because it is too expensive to treat them. Cleanhub steps in to collect these items and turn them into something with value. They get repurposed as an energy source.

Cleanhub uses software to monitor, track and verify how much waste is recovered by their collection partners. Partners report plastic waste collection through an app that also connects them to a curated network of safe treatment facilities. Through this digital platform, Cleanhub can guarantee that all parties involved have collected and treated the plastic waste as promised.

Marine Stewardship Council

Partner

An international non-profit organization, the Marine Stewardship Council is on a mission to protect our oceans and seafood supply. Working with fisheries, scientists, and seafood industry stakeholders, MSC ensures that our oceans are fished responsibly and that you, the consumer, can easily find seafood that is certified sustainable.

Only seafood that meets three key criteria earns MSC certification:

  • Healthy stock status
  • Sustainable habitat and by-catch impact
  • Successful fishery management

So, when you see the MSC blue fish label on your favourite seafood, like many of our Ocean’s products, you can rest assured that it was caught wild using sustainable fishing methods and is traceable from ocean to table. By choosing products with this label, you are directly supporting fisheries that take care of our oceans.

We are committed to supporting our communities by feeding those in need.

Partnering with Food Banks Canada, Backpack Buddies, I Can for Kids, Richmond School District, Coquitlam School District, and Lotus Light Charity, we work to provide nourishment to the most vulnerable members of our communities.

We continue to lean into our commitment to feed the hungry in communities across Canada now and in the future. We hope you’ll join us in supporting your own community by donating your time, food, or money to organizations dedicated to fighting hunger.

Improving Working Conditions

We know that working conditions and standards around the world vary. All our suppliers adhere to a strict code of conduct and undergo social audits that ensure they treat their employees properly.

Ocean’s has joined the Seafood Task Force (STF), an industry-led collaboration that brings transparency and oversight to seafood supply chains. Focused on addressing forced labour and human trafficking through traceability and accountability, STF promotes decent work for employees who fish, farm, and produce seafood.

Protecting the Livelihoods of Coastal Communities

We work with the IPNLF to support livelihoods in coastal communities throughout the world, providing jobs, nutrition, and a model to sustain tuna fisheries and the marine environment. For many coastal communities, one-by-one fishing methods provide an opportunity to develop a profitable and socially responsible domestic fishery sector, while supporting employment, food security, traditional cultures and livelihoods.

Find out how we support the livelihoods of coastal communities through the IPLNF.

Sustainable Fishing

We ensure that our seafood is caught using responsible fishing methods and from fisheries we can trust.

Responsible fishing methods

Spare
Pole & Line fishing

Rated by conservation groups as the most environmentally friendly method for catching fish, fishermen use a single line and hook attached to a pole. Simple and eco-friendly, this method eliminates harm of other marine life.

Purse Seine fishing

Purse seine fishing is used in the open ocean to target dense schools of pelagic fish, like tuna. Using this method, fishermen surround the school of fish with a vertical net ‘curtain.’ The bottom of the net is drawn together, much like tightening the cords of a drawstring purse, to enclose the fish. There are two types of Purse Seine fishing:

With FADs in MSC certified fisheries

Purse Seine vessels use floating objects called FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) that attract fish. FADs are usually bamboo rafts with old nets hanging underneath or floating logs and vegetal debris. All Ocean’s tuna caught using FADs comes exclusively from MSC certified fisheries that ensure enough fish is left in the ocean to reproduce. This is achieved by using a purse seine net with a mesh size large enough to allow smaller fish to swim free.

purseSeineFAD Free Purse Seine fishing

FAD-Free purse seine vessels fish on free swimming schools of tuna to avoid catching untargeted sea creatures.

Longline Fishing with Circle Hooks

The longline fishing method involves setting a main line from a large reel. As this main line is deployed, baited hooks on branch lines are attached at regular intervals. Floats and float lines are also attached at regular intervals. These suspend the main line in the water column at a predetermined depth. The deepest hooks of each section between floats are set at around 300-400m to target fish in deeper waters like Albacore tuna. Ocean’s suppliers use circle hooks to minimize catching untargeted creatures like birds and turtles.

Plastic Neutrality

Being plastic neutral means that for any amount of plastic we use in our operations, a measured equivalent of plastic waste is recovered and removed from the environment through recycling and/or waste management efforts.

Cleanhub & Collection Partners

Ocean’s chose to work with Cleanhub, a company that collects and repurposes plastic before it enters the ocean. Through Cleanhub, Ocean’s partnered with Tridi Oasis in 2021 and 2022, a female-led company. The company’s founders, Dian and Dinda grew Tridi into a company that employs around 100 people and recycles 750 metric tonnes of plastic bottles a month.

Beginning December 2022, we have a new partnership with ecoBali, another one of CleanHub’s collection partners that champions plastic waste management and recycling. Founded in 2006, ecoBali provides a waste collection and recycling service that is based on waste separation at the source. To date, ecoBali has successfully managed over 5000 tonnes of ocean-bound waste.

Ghost Gear

Ghost gear refers to any fishing gear that has been abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded, and is the most harmful form of marine debris. The cause is rarely intentional and more often because of severe weather, snags under the surface, or a collision with other gear or boats. Regardless, World Animal Protection says ghost gear is found in every sea and ocean on the planet.

Every year 640,000 tons of gear is lost or left in our oceans (that’s as heavy as two Empire State Buildings!) making it one of the biggest threats to our marine life today.

Through our partnership with the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, we are helping solve the problem of lost and abandoned fishing gear worldwide. Co-founder Ben Kneppers says ‘GGGI has become the global hub for understanding the problem and then taking the action to end it. The value of members coming from a variety of areas enables us to create a multi-pronged approach with a proven track record that is creating real positive change.’
